Standing under the warm #Dubai sun, we felt the heat of the #climate discussions burning even brighter. Eyes met across the table, igniting conversations fueled by a shared passion for our planet. Debates raged, agreements were forged, and a tapestry of hope was woven in the desert sands. New friendships bloomed, forming a global network united for a greener tomorrow.
Recent devastating events, from floods in Libya and Pakistan to wildfires in Canada and record-breaking heat in September 2023, underscore the urgency of addressing climate change. #COP28 in Dubai, provides a crucial opportunity for nations to correct their course.
COP28 stands out for featuring the first-ever “Global Stocktake” since the 2015 Paris Agreement. The Global Stocktake’s synthesis report in September 2023 highlighted significant shortcomings in global climate efforts but also presented a blueprint for progress.
Now countries must focus on four key areas:
Transformational Response to the Global Stocktake: Acknowledge gaps in action, fulfill financial commitments, and set ambitious targets in the next round of nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Adopt economy-wide targets for collective emissions reduction needed to limit #globalwarming.
Accelerate Systems Transformation: Address the role of #fossilfuels, commit to scaling back or phasing out, and intensify the shift towards renewable energy. Transform global food and land use systems, acknowledging their role in climate change. Recognize cities as critical partners in climate action.
Respond to Increasingly Severe Climate Impacts: Fully operationalize the Loss and Damage Fund to assist climate-vulnerable nations. Implement the Global Goal on Adaptation framework, enhancing adaptive capacity and resilience. Address #climateimpacts that communities are facing and will face in the future.
Delivering Climate Finance: Meet existing finance commitments, especially the $100 billion goal by 2025. Prepare for a new post-2025 global climate finance goal and ensure financial flows align with low-carbon, climate-resilient development.
COP28 UAE is a moment for both #accountability and #action. Leaders and negotiators must make bold commitments, fully addressing the Global Stocktake and Loss and Damage Fund. Success at COP28 requires tangible actions benefiting people, nature, and the climate, moving beyond rhetoric and posturing.
